In 1986, Fleer took a chance and issued a men's basketball set even though Topps was the unofficial "king of basketball cards" at the time. To minimize it's risk, Fleer chose to limit it's quantity so it wouldn't be stuck with lots of leftover cases at the end of the season. This decision would leave an indelible mark on the basketball card collecting community forever! In the year of its issuance, 1986 Fleer basketball was a tough sell at $10 per set and $15-$20 per box. Michael Jordan's rookie card was only a couple of bucks, and pocket change for the rest of the singles!! The first issue of Beckett Basketball Card Monthly Magazine (March 1990 - 4 years after Fleer's renaissance set), Michael Jordan's 86 Fleer rookie card was listed at $175. Now a near mint specimen will run you about $1,000!! Other rookie cards listed of "all time greats" include Charles Barkley - $30 (now $90), Clyde Drexler - $5 (now $60), Karl Malone - $45 (now $70), and Hakeem Olajuwon - $35 (now $100). The set price was $350 (now $1,450). What does this have to do with women's basketball cards? Although it's not reasonable to compare the amazing sums commanded for the 1986 Fleer cards, the point is that the state of current women's basketball cards is much the same as Fleer in 1986/87. The 1997 Pinnacle WNBA cards will stand as the inaugural set and anything after that will not be quite the same. The prices for the basic Pinnacle cards of the best players in the game are also relatively low. Compared (unfairly as it may be) to their male counterparts, $2.00 to $4.00 for Lisa Leslie, Rebecca Lobo, and Sheryl Swoopes is next to nothing!! Did you know that the 1997 Pinnacle cards were not the first women's basketball cards? In 1994 and 1996, Upper Deck produced cards for the Team USA men's and women's teams. These are the first nationally issued cards from a major manufacturer of today's women players and are considered to be their rookie cards!! As in the case of 1986 Fleer, these cards were largely ignored when they came out. The 1994 Upper Deck Team USA subset consists of 6 cards (all rookie cards) and the 1996 Upper Deck Team USA subset consists of 12 cards (6 of which are rookie cards). Both sets are borderless on front and contain gold foil stamping. The 1996 set contains die cut cards which have photos on both front and back. The 1994 cards are portraits and the 1996 cards contain action shots. We have obtained a limited supply of these cards of the biggest stars of the game! Here is the list with prices for both singles and sets: 1994 Upper Deck Team USA: Jennifer Azzi RC (#79) (ABL) - $4.00 each Complete Set of 6 (+1*) = $20 each *There are 2 other women's cards of Cheryl Miller in the 1994 set. Since she was not on Team USA that year, these cards are not included in the subset. The first card is an on-court action shot and the other is a portrait with her brother, Reggie Miller. Both are available for $4.00 each. If you buy the complete 1994 set, one card of your choice will be included! 1996 Upper Deck Team USA: Jennifer Azzi (#61) (ABL) - Singles SOLD OUT (at $2.00 ea) Complete Set of 12 = $25 each SPECIAL DEAL - If you wish to buy both the 1994 and 1996 sets, the combined price is $40.00 (including both Cheryl Miller cards).
